And I certainly didn't think her reaction to her situation was in any way based in reality. Maybe it's just me - I'm sure Allison's broken tooth would argue with me. I enjoyed his demise, but he seemed a little too easy to take down. In reality, other than braining some poor old store owner over the head, Randy's bark was worse than his bite, and his reputation from the prequel a little bit of a let down. I was freaked out a little when I realized that it was the same "Randy" from "Randy's Tale" that had come knocking on Allison and Mike's door. I so wanted more here.Īnd as much as I enjoyed the second half of the book, where we got into the heads of beautiful, vain, and spiteful cheerleader Marla Masters and her sister Madison, as they spend a Saturday morning detention with a group of nerds (think Heathers meets The Breakfast Club), I didn't enjoy the first half of the book that well. When the Air Force chick finally goes down, after a glorious sequence of holding off the zombies with a shotgun, she is finally killed as 'the zombies pull her apart like taffy.' That's it, one sentence. The deaths of many of the characters at the end of the book were described briefly, and in my opinion, needed more meat, or none at all. I enjoyed the character of Allison, who was likeable and smart, as well as the young high school teacher, Valerie Carpenter, in the second half of the book.Ī decent read, the book was concerned much more with the characters and their ephemeral hook ups than with any real zombie action or gore. Things turn sideways fairly quickly with the arrival of zombies, an escaped convict named Randy, a hair's breath rescue by Two Guy and A Fire Truck, and a high school populated by teenaged angst and hormones.
